Match Cards

Sources and verification

The reference: the app

The rules described on this site are those of the Match Cards app, read from its code: attempt, limit of missed attempts, levels, card deal, game code. When the app's built-in help and its code differ, the site follows the code.

Sources consulted

  • Concentration (card game) (new tab) (Wikipedia (in English)): the traditional pairs game, its names and its solo variant, where attempts are counted.
  • Pelmanism (new tab) (pagat.com (in English)): the traditional rules with playing cards: cards face down, two cards flipped per turn, unmatched cards put back in place.
  • Short-term memory (new tab) (Wikipedia (in French)): why a large board is harder to remember than a small one (Strategy page).

How the examples are verified

Before each publication, two independent programs redo all of the site's calculations:

  • a tool connected to the app's engine, without modifying it, deals each example game from its code, as the app does, and plays it card by card with the app's functions that flip, compare and count the cards;
  • it reads the attempt limit for each choice in the New game window and checks the 1,344 combinations offered;
  • it plays 7,500 games dealt by the app to measure the missed attempts of a perfect memory;
  • a second program, written separately, recalculates each limit, re-reads each code, replays each example game and blocks publication at the slightest discrepancy.
