Match Cards

Levels, number of cards and card types

In brief

The New Game window offers four choices: pairs or triplets (Images to match), the difficulty, the number of cards and the card type. The difficulty changes the images and the limit on missed attempts; the number of cards changes the size of the board.

Pairs or triplets

The Images to match row offers "2 cards" (pairs) and "3 cards" (triplets). The available numbers of cards depend on this choice:

  • pairs: 12, 20, 30 and 60 cards;
  • triplets: 12, 21, 30 and 54 cards.

Easy, Medium, Hard

Each subject in the catalog comes in 5 image versions. The difficulty determines which ones are dealt:

  • Easy: "Very different images, easy to recognize." Each group is a different subject, in its first version.
  • Medium: "Varied images, sometimes similar. Look closely at the details." Each group is a different subject, in a randomly picked version.
  • Hard: "Very similar images with small differences. Only exactly identical images go together." Few subjects, each in several versions: each version forms its own group.

Hard example (game MM2-PAAW-AAAAAAF): the 12 cards show only "cat" and "lion", in different versions. The letter after the name, added by the site, tells the versions apart.

Medium example (game MM2-PBAB-AAAAAAB, card type "All families"): each pair is a different subject.

The limit on missed attempts

The app calculates the limit from the number of groups, the mode and the difficulty: it grows faster than the board, because a large board is harder to remember, and it is more generous in triplets, where you have to remember three places per image. Values in the app:

Missed attempts allowed, without reshuffling.
